how to remove pc from domain without loosing user settings and email

Hello All,
I need to remove some ps running XP PRO from a domain (they are not talking to the domain now, server 2003 had to be reinstalled).  I tried this with one pc and it has taken me 2-3 days to recover the machine...I am now very scared to try and reconnect to the server or to remove the others from the domain.
I need an easy way to do this that is very stright forward spelled out in steps  Please
Thanks, \Addie

Solution: how to remove pc from domain without loosing user settings and email

Hi,

First, unplug the cable from the network.

Then make sure you have access to the local administrator account on the PC. To do this, when logging into the PC log in as Administrator and in the "log on to" box make sure you select the local PC, not the domain.
You need to have this password (or else will need to use a method to reset it, look at http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ for info on how to do this).

If you want to save the user profile then go into C:\Documents and Settings and copy out the profile that you want to save. Domain profiles may be include the domain name. Copy this to a location like C;\Save profiles and make sure you reset all the permissions on this folder.

Then go into System Properties, Computer Name tab, use the Network ID Wizard to un-join the computer from the domain using the domain administrators credentials. You'll need to restart after this step.

That should do it.
