Create list in which items have 4 attachments

We would like to create a list in which every instance of an item has more than one attachment, up to 4.

Ideally, there would be a Browse button, similar to Explorer for each attachment.

Currently we're hacking this funcationality by having one Doc library with the attachments in it, and a second List with a lookup (allowing multiple values) to the first Attachments library, column Title. It sort of works, but is both unweidly beyond 30 docs in the Attachments library (there will be hundreds), and cumbersome for the uploading user.

I know there are no built-in columns of Attachment type, but this would be perfect, anybody point me in the right direction for perhaps programming such a field?

I may not understand you problem correctly, but you can attach more than one file to an item. Not in a single step, it is true, but you can edit the item again and attach a second file to it, and so on.
